ABOUT

Kylee Anspach is a functional ceramic artist, working in Greenville, South Carolina.

PHILOSOPHY

My artistic practice is rooted in both technical precision and a joyful embrace of imperfection.

I draw inspiration from mid-century modern aesthetics, nature, and my travels abroad. My unique approach combines a love of ceramics with illustration while my forms showcase detailed carvings reflecting the movement and essence of my material.

Each piece is hand-made, featuring intricate carvings using a technique called sgraffito paired with hand-drawn and painted designs inspired by the quiet beauty of nature. My work invites a slower pace, encouraging appreciation for life’s small moments. No two pieces are alike, with each one being a reflection of careful craftsmanship and a deep connection to the natural world.

As “functional ceramics,” my pieces are intended to be “living” and “usable” pieces of art, cultivating memories for each person using them.

BIOGRAPHY

The Story

My love for ceramics began when I was fortunate enough to take an advanced ceramics course in high school. I was always painting and I loved to draw but when I took that particular class everything shifted; something came alive in me.

After wrapping up college with a degree in Art Education with focuses in ceramics and painting, I taught high school art for 5 years and loved inspiring my students to learn, grow, and, at times, introduce that same awakening I had. Art just does something for your soul.

Later, I moved to South Carolina with my husband and landed at Hollowed Earth Pottery, an amazing ceramics studio, where I work as a studio tech, production potter, and continue to teach.

It’s been such a blessing to be a part of this community of artists and teach what I deeply love every day.

Since then, I’ve opened my personal studio (Sparrow & Clay), taught classes, given demo’s, and shown my work in galleries, markets, and festivals. Additionally, I’ve been known to do “live” throwing at various events.

You can find my work at Hollowed Earth Pottery as well as select events, festivals, markets, and in my online drops.
