Is my piece dishwasher-safe?
Yes, but I do recommend handwashing your piece for extending its lifespan.
Is my piece oven-safe?
Yes, pieces are safe up to 450º with a pre-heat. You won’t want to put pieces into an already-hot oven.
Yes, my pieces are 100% food-safe. The raw clay on the outside is sealed with a liquid quartz coating which creates a barrier to keep water from seeping into it, extending its lifespan, and sealing it from bacteria.
How do you make your work?
Nearly all of my pieces are thrown on a potter’s wheel by hand. I create all of my designs using a carving method called sgraffito and then hand-paint and hand-draw every illustration you see on any of my pieces. No two mugs are alike and no two cups are the same, as each piece is hand-crafted carrying its own unique flair.
How long does it take you to make your pieces?
It takes me about 10 hours to create one of my standard mugs, so the larger the piece, the longer the time!
How long have you been doing pottery?
I have been working with ceramics since 2011!
What inspires your art?
All of my work is inspired by nature but some things are more personal than others. For example, the reason why I love peonies so much, is because it is the state flower of Indiana, where I grew up. The dogwood tree was my dad’s favorite tree. My husband and I love to bird on our hikes so any bird has some connection.
Where does the name Sparrow & Clay come from?
“Sparrow & Clay” is inspired by the synthesis of my faith and my creative practice. The sparrow is a spiritual symbol for the faithfulness of the Divine and the understanding that I am deeply loved. My journey in becoming a full-time artist and maker has been one of risk and faith, so it serves as a constant reminder that I am being molded by the hand of the Creator just as I mold the clay in my own work.

Do you take on commissions?
I take on just a few commissions each year and will open up my books for submissions. I typically choose projects that are of interest to me or align with my creative aesthetic. I do not do commissioned work that goes beyond my personal style (ie: company logos, recreations of other work, copying other artists’ work, etc.).
